Cooly Rocks On, or ‘Coolies’ as it is affectionately known by the regulars, is a festival full of shows, live music, and of course: hundreds and hundreds of immaculately presented classic cars. Having the chance to attend four days of the festival—including the main weekend where all the cars were on display—meant I was able to capture a range of detail and action shots of the ‘Coolies’ cars, plus some of the local scenery that is Coolangatta and Rainbow Bay on the Gold Coast.
Where is the Cooly Rocks On festival held?
The festival is held over the Tweed Heads, New South Wales and Coolangatta, Queensland border spanning from Wharf Street in Tweed Heads to Kirra Point in Queensland.
What happens during the festival?
The festival begins on a Friday with a welcome show and continues for 11 days in June each year. Shows are on most evenings at various venues throughout the festival precinct in the lead up to the Grand Finale weekend when the major streets are closed from midnight Friday night until midnight Sunday night. The Grand Finale weekend showcases over 1300 cars built before and up to 1969 in a Show ‘n Shine and evening car cruises. The weekend includes a street parade, over 200 market stalls, outdoor stages and dancing, a carnival and other entertainment. The festival closes on the second Monday with a final show.
